Tula Pink - Kapitel IV

By now I finished my blocks for soooo long, but not the collage of alle blocks of the 4th chapter. Dishonor on me, dishonor on my family and dishonor on my cow! (Do you know the cartoon Mulan and the little dragon Mushu? He says this and I love this saying. It's soooo funny, that I could remember this right in the moment.) So, but now here at last the overview of chapter four, which I will link up to Eva. Sandra had an surgery on Monday and I hope, everything went well and she gets fine right soon. Wish her luck, that she can join in soon.

UFOs

Next week, there is eventually the "wholecloth"-course with Nana. I'm looking sooo forward to it, you don't mind. And as I hadn't quilted for a while and both quilts for the Nadelwelt in May have to be finished, I started quilting again. I cannot show you the Moda Juggling Summer until the exhibition, here is only a detail of it. You can see three quilting pattern. I will quilt three irregular wide stripes with different quilt patterns and "connect" them with horizontal lines. I like it. If you remember there are leaning crosses at the top. I will encircle them in the ditch and quilt across them. I find it really difficulty, so I tried to use a ruler as guideline. This comes off really easy, I must admit.

Mal gucken, ob Christian auch mal Auto fahren will.

I have sewn on a little bit my mugrug. As I can sew at my sewing machine again, the handsewing lost its attractivity. I don't know why. *looking innocent* But I will start with my husband and visit my dad at his cure at the south of the Black Forest. For this I packed a little pouch with English Paper Piecing things. Let's see, if Christian likes to drive the car, too.

neue Testberichte ... und Schnuffeligel / new testing results ... and smooch-hedgehogs

Today the wheather is so bad (only heavy raindrops, which hits my window.... (an old german music) *gg*), so you have to sit at the sewing machine. And now I like to show you my last both sewing machine feet:
- the applique foot "F" and
- the ´non-slippery-foot.

For my little neighbour downstairs and for a godchild of a friend I've sewn two new smooch-hedgehogs. The hedgehog is a self-made pattern and on one site, there is a fur-fabric. On this I always applique a red heart - the best chance to try my new applique foot. I compiled the three applique feet for you below. Two of them came to me with the sewing machine and during the last years I did not adjudg them to be "good" again and again. You can see, there are many distinct differences between them:

1.) The new foot is obvious shorter than the old one. By this theres less feet on the fabric and by this - I think it is the greatest advantage - the foot is much more agile. With the old one you will have to stop much often and replace it and so there becomes some little gaps in the seems. If you don't stop the fabric gets some poor wrincles. Such a gap you can see below at the top left of the heart. With my new applique foot this didn't happen.

2.) The new foot has two "grip bars" - one for the snatch, which every foot has, and a second one, which has to be put into the mount at the backside of the snatch. By this the foot is fixed and lays parallel to the sewing machine. This is for my opinion a pro and contra. If the thickness of the fabric changes, the passage is sometimes difficulty and you have to help a little bit. But on the other side, the foot always lay down at the fabric, which I prefer nearly most of the time.

3.) The new foot consits only of clear plastic. The old feet have metallic bars at the left and right. For my opinion, the new foot slides in a better way than the old one, but this can be only an illusion.

The naming of the feet are little bit deseptive. Both the oold closed foot and the new also closed applique foot are named "F" and the second old opened foot is named "F2". Why are there two different feet with the same name? I don't know. Of course, they are principally similar, but they have some differences anyway.

And now let's have a look onto the new non-slippery-foot. The results you have seen already - the "Open Wide Zipper Pouch". (By the way, my Mom was really happy about it, either, I can tell you. *self totally happy*) I tried to sew the leather with my flexible zipper foot, how I sometimes make it with normal fabric pouches - no chance! The leather wasn't transported any way. With the new foot - no problem. It doesn't leave some traces onto the leather, which the transport below certainly does. If you will sew on the right side of the leather, I think, such a foot is essential. By the way I tried to sew some clear foil onto leather, how you make it for adress tags - also no problems. Apart from that you will have to lay a sheet of paper or similar between feet and leather/foil to sew. And with the foil it can bring waves into it.

Conclusion: Both foot, I can absolutly recommend for my Janome MC6600. I have bought all feet at "Nähwelt Flach", by the way.

And last but not least the finished smooch-hedgehogs. I'm just about to bring one of them downstairs. Let's see if the little boy knows me at all.

Yeah, yeah, it's me again. I have too much time at the moment and also too little. ;) I think, you know this, do you? Thank you so much for these many comments! I always so happy, when a mail appears in my mailbox. :)

I will give my Mom beneath the card a bobbin lace book. But anyway, I like to make something self-sewn. Once in a while, I'd seen this tutorial for a pouch by Noodlehead, whose opening is sooooo much wide - the "Open Wide Zippered Pouch". Some days ago I've seen this little bags again at another blog and then I thought to kill three birds with one stone: trying a new pouch, first time sewing with leather and trying the new non-slippery-foot. And do you know something? The cut is genius!!! This will be sewn much more often, because it's totally genius with this huge opening and the effort is just a little bit more than a standard pouch, which I sew normally.

And if I think about it: it is a pouch full of premieres. Beneath cut and leather I made a real tag for the first time and sewn my first leather-label into the pouch.

In January there is always a special offer at Nadel und Faden "10% off Christmas fabrics"! Can you imagine, that this isn't good for my moneybag, but wonderful for my fabric stash at home? *gg*
Especially I love, that at the moment there are so many beautiful and modern Christmas fabrics, which you can use during the whole year. Amazing, isn't it? Do you think this, too?

In January there are so many birthdays around us. Three are already through and at least four are still coming. I showed you some little fabric pieces some days before. Do you remember this picture?

Marianne gave the right answer and now I can show you the first birthday card today. At Wednesday, it's my Mom's birthday and she will get it. We are all big cat lovers, so I took a piece of fabric with a cat face. I got the idea for this card at the blog of Frollein Pfau. She has a wonderful blog with so many creatively ideas.

ertse Testberichte / first testing results

Here I'm back again. Today I tried my new sewing feet and like to share my (first) experiences with you. Some of you wrote, that they are thinking about buying some of this feet, too. I have sewn a little sample. It's out of some relative fine black fabric at the front and back and a leftover piece of bambus interface of my Mystery. I tested
- both Hem feet 4mm and 6mm,
- the pearl foot 2.5-4mm and
- the binder foot.

Let's begin with the Hem feet. With the fine fabric it was going very well. With a normal to little bit thick cotton fabric, also. In any video (unfortunately I cannot refind it) I had seen, that it's a good idea to fold over the beginning of fabric twice as wide as the foot would do and fix the beginning with 1-2 stitched. Then thread the fabric into the worm and hold the fabric tight at the end with the thread of the fixing stitches. If you hold the edge of fabric, which should be rollen, a little bit to the left, the rolled hem goes it alone. After the good reults with 4mm and 6mm, I tried my hem foot with a wide of 2mm again, which came with my sewing machine. It doesn't work very well, either. I think, you can use it only with very fine fabric like silk etc. and with fine thread and needle.

The second foot I deem as good, is the pearl foot. I used the commercially pearls, you can buy everywhere, with a diameter of 2.6mm, which I threaded. Depending on the diameter there are two feet - one for pearls up to 2mm diameter and pearls between 2.5mm and 4mm. You can test it in a simple way by putting the foot onto the string and pull the pearls under this. I used the normal zig-zag stitch with the wide of 2.6mm and a length of 1.5mm. That brought some really good results. The leangth is approximately the height of the pearls. By this the thread nearly disappears under the pearls (lower photos). I've once seen to use a very, very long stitch's length. The string isn't fixed by this very well and the stitches can be seen very well. I also tried a length of 2mm. By this there are loops onto the pearls, either, because the thread cannot disappear really good between the pearls. By twiddling and scratching a little bit, the thread disappeares under the pearls, too. So, fitting the thread to the fabric and the length of the stitch to the height of the pearls, the threads disappears nearly invisible under the pearl string. The feet work very well and you can sew light curves, too.

Last but not least habe ich den Schrägbandfuß ausprobiert.

Last but not least, I tried the binder foot. Whew, this will take some practice and patience. There is no tutorial in the package, so I searched at the internet and found a very good one. Have a look, if you think about buying this foot. If the photo doesn't work as link, you can try it ***here***.

The binder foot needs a stripe of 1". So the binding won't be very wide, also depending, what you want to edge - in maximum 1/4". By the way, I top-stichted the edge with a straight stitch and close to the edge, so the sandwich gets a little bit thinner and doesn't diverge. At the video they say, you should starch your fabric. First, I thought, that's not nessecary at all, but my first try didn't work at all. At the backside the binding wasn't attach at every inch. So, I starched the fabric and ironed it, fold the beginning like a bought bias binding and that work much better. I also pulled out a longer strip at the backside, so I could pulled everything a little bit at the beginning of my second try. So, it went very well. Maybe it will be better to lengthen the stitch-length, but my standard of 2.5mm is fine, too. Ok, my conclusion: You may have it, but you don't have to. You will be limited in the wide of the binding and the sandwich may not be too thick. It isn't useless in no way, but you will need some practice with it. I will keep it in any case and I could imagine to bind some leather for example with it in a nice way. If you can sew a ready made bought bias binding, I will have to try. I will report you.
There is a big binder foot by Janome. This costs about 120€ (mine costs 15€), but can be enlarged by other add-ons with other width and can also be used for usual quilts.

So, if you have read until this - respect and thank you! I hope, I could help you and if there more questions: give it to me! :)

In the meanwhile I got some photos of my Christmas presents in action. My little godson hat so much fun with the shark-pencil-bag - and also opening the package. ;)

Also my sister's table-runner is on duty - just as the star-tablecloth, which she got two or three years before. That's what I like very much.

U.a. Sorry! Ich gehöre doch einfach an die Nähmaschine.

Thank you so much for your gently comments! I can understand, that you are a little bit confused, that I wrote, I have to lay down the most time and then told you, that I will go shopping in my favorite patchwork shop. Ok, the docs said a little bit of movement is ok and on the other hand: I needed activity. So, I stock up on English Paper Piecing templates. Amongst others I got some hexagons, which my lovely husband split up in half-hexagons. I began to sew a outstanding Christmas gift for a friend. It should be a red mugrug once in a while. First searching for red fabrics and single pieces had been sewn. It's not finished right now and the pattern is difficulty to see, I think. I must admit, that's not mine. I admire people like Grit, who create such masterpieces like "La Passion" - but this won't be my thing for a longer while. Sorry! I belong to the sewing machine.

Daraus will ich Geburtstagskarten nähen. Versprochen!

And as I belong to the sewing machine and as I was more or less brave for the last three weeks, I reward myself and bought some new sewing machine feet:
- one applique foot,
- one non-slippery-foot,
- one bias binder,
- a pearl foot set and
- a hemmer foot set.
When I have used the feet, I will give you a feedback
And beside this I found some clear KamSnap-buttons. They had to come with the rest. Let's have a look, where I can use them for the first time. And among others I had a lot of time to surf the Internet and I got a nice idea. Last time I asked you what you can see at the picture and what I will do with this. Marianne by "Nähen am Neckar" gave the right answer. In the box, there are little pieces of fabric in a burgee form. I want to sew some birthday-cards by them. And as I don't have the best handwriting for such cards, I bought a set of alphabet stamps. I will start with this at the weekend, because my family doctor said today, I should start to live again - insofar as sitting is ok. Jipieh!!! But I will notice, if it is to much and then I will lay back on the couch and look some of Inspector Barneby episodes. Promised!

The doctors banished me back an the couch again - less sitting, more lieing - as possible only lieing. I hate it! - My sewing machine is right in front of me and I cannot use it. For English Paper Piecing, there are the templates are missing - that will be changed tomorrow. Today, here is a holiday in Baden-Württemberg - Epiphany. When I was a child I was soooo often a carol singer - I cannot count it. My favorite song is "Angels We Have Heard on High" Do you know it? Whew, this are childhood memories. And the tons of chocolate after. *gg* - Ok, tomorrow the shops will have open again here and then I will go shopping. By the moment, I full of hope, that I can sew in three weeks at Nana's course and for this I will have to buy some fabric. And I want to sew something special for my mom. It's her birthday next week. So I think she will have to wait a little bit since I can sit well again, but interfacing and zippers I can get right now. And as told I need some templates, so I can make something productive.

I like to thank you all out there for your gently comments and health wishings! Sorry, when I'm bitching around these days, but I'm sooo bad in "just lieing". And a happy welcome to my new readers. I happy, that you like to read my blog.

And if you are such limited the whole day through, you will have muuuuuuuuch time to surf and get some new ideas. *gg* So, here is a little riddle for you, what I will make with this itzybitzy parts of fabrics.

Fabrics cut, parts of blocks miscut (sometimes there are really to much lines at the rulers), got really angry about myself, fabrics new cut and new sewn together. Now, they are ready! One of them is a little bit modified, because I wanted to use my new favorite fabric. (Don't worry, I will arange all the blocks at the end, so there won't be two racoons right beside each other.) 70% of the blocks are ready. Wow! Now, the end is coming near. The intermediate stripes are already bought - ready cut. I ordered them between the years at Quilt Cabin and they were sent very fast. With this order, some other fabrics had moced in, too, amoung others 5m of the black Lipari for my Amish-quilt, which I will (have to) sew for the exhibition of the Cannstatter Stichlinge in October. Now I will concentrate myself on my UFO-stack. So, a great deal to do - let's go about it! :D

*gg*

The last words of a quilters-husband? - "I put your blocks together..." (and not the right way for sure...) - This happened today during the early afternoon. But don't fear - my lovely husband is still alive! :D I had displayed them yesterday on our impromtu coffee table and a visitor had announced himself. Because we all had no lunch at all, I stood at the citche and my husband wanted to be a darling and tidy up the living room... Well-intended amd my calling "I tidy up the blocks by myself!" he missunderstood this and stapled them. He said: "I also followed the order!" Well-intended, but the wrong one! :D Ok, fortunately there are only 12 blocks. I will resort them. I must admit, that I'm sometimes a little bit strange, when it comes to my order, although I'm not straight in this. *gg*

Es heißt "Grafitti Quilting - a simple guide to complex designs" von Karlee Porter. ;)

Because of the visit - which we really enjoyed - I haven't sewn sewn anything. Maybe tomorrow. And while I cannot show you something sewn, I like to show you a new book, which I bought before Christmas. It is again an amazing book for getting new inspirations. It's called "Grafitti Quilting - a simple guide to complex designs" by Karlee Porter. Such great ideas and such an refreshing new way for quilting. I found it at Karlees page. I like the rainbow-colored modern wholecloths. (The pictures are by her page and there you can see much more there.) If I will be a big girl and if I will have time, then I will make such great quilts, too. ;)

I decided to add a new page above, on which I will list the books, which I will show you during the next time. I'm always fascinated how many different kinds of books are there and because you cannot look inside most of them, I always happy about tips for new inspirations on other pages.

Muss mich also noch schonen.

During the last weeks, I hadn't the time to sew for the Tula Pink City Sampler nor sewing in any way. So, I cut some fabrics yesterday and sewed them together today. Et voilà! I'm ahead of shedule by Sandra and Eva. You shouldn't let me begin with such a little bit after such an abstinence. The sewing was easy and fast like everytime. And that's good, because sitting isn't as easy with a seat ring and a swifel chair as I thought. I have to save myself.

Today in the morning I got mail. Before Christmas I asked Jeannette to buy me a special Tula Pink fabric. I love this racoon-fabric and couldn't find it anymore. But Jeannette got it and send it to me. But you dont't believe that was all, do you? The gentle Jeannette gave me this wonderful Mugrug. Thank you soooo much!!! And the fabric was immediatly used in one of the blocks. Maybe I will sew one block, which I don't really like in its present value, again. Let's have a look. I'm not sure at the moment and maybe I will wait until I see all blocks together.

*freu*

After ten days of abstinence I could sew the first time at my sewing machine. The four fortune cookies made of fabric and felt appeared by this. We had two friends at home for Silvester, we cooked an Indian dinner and my friend filled the cookies with gently spells. I hope, you had such a nice start into the New Year like we had! Today I approved the City Sampler and cut fabrics for the next blocks. Tomorrow I will sew. *smile*
