Oh, my dears! Thank you so, so much for your comments concerning my last two posts! I will show you the sheeps in total for sure. I finished quilting and will now have to do some sewing again, so they can be hook up to Rafael's room.
Schön, dass euch der Sternuntersetzer so gut gefallen hat. Es gab noch ein paar Rückfragen, wie man denn genau die Hexagons zuschneidet. Deswegen habe ich beim zweiten Untersetzer einfach mal die Schritte photographiert und hoffe, sie helfen euch weiter. Ich hatte bereits alle drei Hexagons, die ich aus den Streifen bekommen konnte, zugeschnitten. Von daher musste ich da etwas improvisieren, aber ich denke, das Prinzip ist klar.
I'm so happy, that you like the star mat so much. There had been some request how to cut the hexagons. So, I made some pictures of every step and I hope, they will help you. I had already cut all three hexagons I could get from the stripes. So, I hat to improvise a littel bit, but I think, it will work.
I. Streifen in ein Hexagon schneiden/Cutting stripes to a hexagon
Ausgehend von der Mittellinie der Streifen im 60° Winkel die Seiten zuschneiden.
Starting from the mid-line of the stripes cutting the sides with a angel of 60°.
II. Seitenlänge des Hexagons ausmessen/Measuring side length of the hexagon
Bei einem Hexagon sind alle sechs Seiten gleich lang. Also kann man nun die Seitenlänge ausmessen und an der rechten und linken Seite markieren.
The sides of a hexagon have all the same length. So, you can now measure the side length and mark them at the left and right side of the stripes.
III. Die restlichen Seiten schneiden/Cutting the other sides
Das Linieal mit der 60° Markerung anlegen, so dass ein 120°-Winkel am Stoff entsteht und so die Hexagonform zuschneiden.
Laying the ruler with the 60° marking at the fabric, so there is a 120°-angle at the stripes and cut the hexagon shape.
IV. Vlies zuschneiden und Stoff aufbügeln/Cutting the batting and iron to the fabric
Ich denke, das muss ich euch nicht zeigen. ;)

V. Großes Hexagon markieren/Marking big hexagon
Einige haben sich bestimmt gedacht, die Größe des großen Hexagons zu bestimmen, wäre kompliziert. Ich habe auch erst gedacht, dass ich es ja mathematisch bestimmen können müsste (2 durch Wurzel(3) mal Seitenlänge des kleinen Hexagons wäre übrigens die richtige Lösung ;) ). Ja, muss man aber gar nicht!!! Einfach die Linealkante senkrecht zur Winkelhalbierenden des 120°-Winkels an den Spitzen anlegen und die Grundlinie markieren oder aber im 30° Winkel an die Seiten des kleinen Hexagons anlegen. Aber bitte noch nicht schneiden!
Some of you may think, that calculating the size of the big hexagon would be the most difficult step. I thought this first, too, that there must be a mathematic way to find the right solution (it's 2 times the side-length of the little hexagon devided by root(3) by the way ;) ). Yes, but you don't have to calculate this!!! Simply lay the edge of the ruler onto the bisectrix of the 120° angle of the hexagon's corner or measure a 30° angle of the hexagon's side and mark the baseline. But please, do not cut at this step!
VI. Rückseitenstoff zuschneiden/Cutting the backfabric
Jetzt muss noch der Rückseitenstoff zugeschnitten werden. Da man keine "raw edges" haben möchte, muss eine entsprechende "Nahtzugabe" hinzugefügt werden, die danach umgebügelt wird. Ich habe eine Breite von 3/8" an allen Seiten gewählt und die Spitzen noch gekappt, um nach dem Umbügeln keinen allzu großen Wulst zu bekommen.
Now, you will have to cut the backfabric. If you don't want to get raw edges at the end, you will have to add a "seam allowance" to press them around after it. I chose a width of 3/8". After this I also cut the corners, so there wouldn't be to much bulge after pressing.
VII. Kanten umbügeln/Pressing the border
Zum Kantenumbügeln habe ich eine Bügelhilfe - auch Kantenformer genannt - verwendet. Damit man hinterher ordentliche Spitze erhält, habe ich nicht auf der Markierungslinie umgebügelt, sondern etwas nach außen versetzt. Den Kantenformer ansetzen und mit Nadeln den Stoff fest pinnen. Geht bestimmt auch ohne, der Leinen ist aber störrisch.
To press the edges, I use a edge former. I pressed the fabric a little bit beyond the marking line. So, you will get a nice and sharp tip. Place the edge former and pin the fabric. It's not really necessary, but the linen is a little bit balky.
VIII. Ecken umbügeln/Pressing the corners
Zum Schluss noch die Ecken nach vorne umbügeln und feststecken. Ab damit zur Nähmaschine und festnähen. Und schon ist der Untersetzer fertig! Viel Spaß damit!
At the end, press the corners to the front and pin them with some needles. And now, go to the sewing machine and fix the corners. So, your mat is finished! Have fun!
